I’m sad it ended up that way, because I loved OSXBMC and the old Plex, but what it ended up being is absolutely useless to me in most cases. For playing my own files on my TV, Kodi does it better than Plex could ever even hope to. It’s just a fallback if I ever have to reach my media remotely for some reason, which I almost never do. So I still use Plex, but I’ve also long since lost all faith in Plex.

Kodi ships it’s own player, something Plex also did before, but then stopped doing in favor of the useless built-in player in Android or Apple TV, that had 10% of the file format support that ffmpeg has. Kodi doesn’t have to transcode the video because the audio is some crazy new format like DTS (which Kodi plays back flawlessly), or because I deigned to enable subtitles. Kodi actually reads my video files directly off the share, and doesn’t have to stop to buffer every five minutes. I’ve been running PMS as a fallback and remote service, but I’ve been mainly using Kodi to actually watch videos for years now. However, when thanks to the server/client model my videos began buffering on my internal gigabit network due to absolutely shitty buffering routines without any available user settings, something it had never, ever done before when it simply accessed the files directly from the share, I gave up on Plex altogether. I ultimately gave up on using a Mac Mini as HTPC, and instead got an NVidia shield. Instead they had shifted focus to Windows clients, partnerships with companies like NVidia, the server/client model and, apparently, podcasts and free movies and tv shows.

It went so far that Plex went a whole year without even having any officially supported client whatsoever for Mac OS. That is, until after they started showing signs of prioritizing market share and volume of users over actual video playback quality and stability. I quickly based my entire media library around this one software and was super happy about how it worked. It played everything, it worked with the remote, it had options for days, it had skins, it handled subtitles perfectly.

Disappointed, I looked around for another solution, but was told by a colleague to check out this recently released fork of XBMC for MaC OS X called OSXBMC, and it. At the time, they still had Front Row, a big screen interface for videos and pictures, but when I started using it, I realized it had huge limitations unless you only watched iTunes compatible media. I remember buying a Mac Mini in 2008, my first Apple computer, for the purpose of it being a media center. Please go to the relevant subreddits and support forums, for example: Anyone who wants the client and server on the same device should just use Kodi or OpenELEC, though it is the opinion. While it is possible to run Plex Media Server on a Raspberry Pi, there are limitations, for example, no transcoding.
